Once you rent a VPS / dedicated server from the provider, the first step to do is to be able to connect to a VPS / Dedicated server. Without it, you can not continue to other steps.
Connection to VPS or dedicated server with Windows OS, usually can be done using Remote Desktop Connection. The data provided from the provider usually is as follows
- IP addresses, for example 1.2.3.4
- Username, usually Administrator
- Passwords, for example admin123
Remote Desktop Connection is a standard application if your local computer have Windows as the Operating System. If you are not using Windows, you can use VNC Server, but we are not discussed about VNC here.
To open Remote Desktop Connection, go to the Start menu > All Programs > Accessories > Remtoe Desktop Connection. Or you can also use the “Win + R” then type mstsc in the Open box and click the OK button. You will be given the initial appearance of the Remote Desktop as follows (I used a notebook that contains Windows XP):
Normally, it should be done by only entering the IP address. The system will be asked later after you successfully login. Enter the IP assigned by the provider, and then click the OK button. There is a chance you will get something like the following. This is normal, because the provider you are using SSL, but do not have a certificate (because there is usually an extra charge for installing a certificate, and will be charged to you). If you face an alert box like the one below, just click OK.
If the connection is successful, the screen will appear to login. In this example, we used Windows VPS 2012 R2 Datacenter Edition.
Choose a Administrator username, then enter the password. If successful, you will face screen as below, you’ve managed to connect with Remote Desktop Connection.
If the connection fails, maybe you can not just enter only the IP address. Click the Options button and try some of the following options:
- On the General tab, click ‘Always ask for credentials’, then in the Username, enter the username provided by the provider.
- On the display tab, try to select the smallest Display (Small), which is 640 x 480 pixels. For color, choose the least bit.
- On the Experience tab, in the drop down select the modem (56 kbps), and remove the check at all the options.
Then click Connect. If is still don’t success, try to consult with the provider where you rent the VPS / dedicated server.
